People like poking fun at runners, especially long distance runners. Why would anyone ever want to run for hours upon hours? What good does that do you in life? Long distance runners are seen as having gone beyond healthiness into the obsessiveness category. However, all the runner haters are definitely going to want a crazy endurance runner on their team in the apocalypse and here’s why.
1. You’re going to need someone who can get help.
Obviously if you’re trapped or stranded somewhere, someone has to go get help, ideally with a quickness. The person who can run for 25 miles on almost no food and water will be up for it. They’ll get help and show the helicopter where to find you in a matter of hours, instead of the matter of days that it would take the average person.
2. You’re going to need someone who is willing to share their rations with you.
When the apocalypse comes, everyone is going to be hungry. Luckily the endurance runner will know the precise amount of calories necessary to sustain their activity load. They won’t be trying to overeat or hoard food. They’ll share, and chances are, they will be the ones who can run and gather more food anyway.
3. You’re going to need someone who can push you through the tough times.
During the apocalypse, you’re going to want to give up and crawl into a hole and die. The endurance runner on your team has already put themselves through hundreds of hours of mental anguish, refusing to give up no matter how much pain or exhaustion they’ve felt. They are ready to, not only survive the apocalypse, but to drag whoever has the same mental fortitude along with them.
Long distance runners will no longer be the butt of jokes during the apocalypse. Everyone is going to want one on their team, and all those obsessively tracked miles will pay off for more than just the distance runner.
