Donald Trump and all the ‘Trumps’ of the world can’t win at life. It’s true they might be able to win at business sometimes, they might be able to win an argument, and they might be able to even seize a victory in an election because there are enough similar nitwits out there to vote for them, but all of these will be short-lived victories because ultimately, these folks will fail at life.
What is winning at life you ask? Winning at life means that you become the best person you can be, you positively impact the people around you, and you go to bed every night feeling love. The Trumps of the world will never become the best that they can be, because they completely lack any self-reflection skills. They cannot find a single weakness or flaw in themselves upon which to improve. They might say, you can’t improve on perfection, but if anyone believes they’re perfect, their personality deficit is immeasurable. The ability to see our own mistakes, take ownership when we let someone (even ourselves) down, and to look at what we can do better next time is extremely valuable. This skill should be one of the most sought after in every leader because if a leader cannot reflect on himself, he cannot be a successful leader or model for others.
The second reason the Trumps of the world will never be winning at life is that they don’t positively impact those around them, and they have no desire to do so. Trumps’ lives are about them and only them. Other people are simply props, present to enhance their own view of themselves. The Trumps of the world will only see the negative in everyone and everything around them. This reinforces their personal view that they are the smartest, coolest, and best at everything, and it instills a false confidence that must constantly be upheld even in the face of glaring truths. To win at life, a person must care about more than themselves. You don’t have to have a ‘higher purpose’ necessarily, but you get what you put out in the world. If you’re positively impacting the people you interact with, even a little, you’re going to get it back tenfold. Caring about more than yourself leads to more satisfaction with your life, period.
Lastly, the Trumps of the world can’t go to bed every night feeling love, because they are completely consumed with hate and anger. These people pour all of their energy into the events around them that make them unhappy. They think about them, talk about them, yell about them, tweet about them, but do nothing to change them. They simply stir up more anger and more hate, and there is no part of being full of anger and hate that leads to happiness. If you want to win at life, you look for the things in the world that are beautiful and can be appreciated. You express gratitude every chance you get. You look for the best in people, even the ones that suck, and you don’t let the ones who hate bring you down too. You might see things in the world that anger you, but then you turn that anger into energy that works toward making the situation better, rather than just stirring up more anger by incessantly talking about it.
If you’re feeling disenchanted about the state of the country, and the potential victory of Trump and his band of Trumps, don’t be. Enjoy your life, enjoy winning at life in ways that they will never be able to comprehend.
